Mission of SAFER Team – The goal of the Student Aid for Field Epidemiology Response (SAFER)Team is to be available to assist state and local health departments in the event of an outbreak or other public health event, giving students an invaluable hands-on experience.
WHAT IS SAFER?
- A group of public health graduate students who are interested in learning more about how local health departments conduct outbreak investigations
- A student team that is available to take part in emerging and continuing disease investigations with public health professionals
Training: The students who take part in SAFER have either completed or are currently enrolled in the first semester epidemiology class as well as the first semester of biostatistics. Once students join the team, they are required to take a training session on surveillance and outbreak investigations taught by the Arizona Department of Health Services Infectious Epidemiology Division. Students are also strongly encouraged to also attend trainings provided by Maricopa and Pima County Health Departments on outbreak investigations.
